An artist with a unique style whose works have sold for millions of pounds wants to build a new home studio – covered in his iconic doodle imagery but by laser into a metal shell.
Sam Cox, better known in the art world as Mr Doodle, has teamed up with award-winning architects Hollaway Studio to design a dramatic work space to be built in the garden of his Tenterden home.
Plans for the studio, which have been submitted to Ashford Borough Council, show an aluminium facade engineered “to show-off the art that is being created within”.
Inside the building, designed by the team behind Elwick Place and Curious Brewery in Ashford, will be a cavernous space where Cox, a former pupil of Homewood School, can create his giant doodles.
His four-metre piece ‘Spring’ was sold for more than $1million at auction in Tokyo last year.
The design statement submitted alongside the planning application for the Grange Road property says: “To become an extension of the Doodle World the facade is to be doodled entirely.
“A material needed to be chosen based on its workability whilst also embracing the weathering.
“Laser-cut metal will allow us to create a detailed facade whilst also ensuring that it holds its qualities over time.”
The architects say the aluminium doodles will contrast with the black building behind, creating a monochrome look which mirrors much of Cox’s work.
Inside the studio there will be a double-height work area, with a huge door which will allow canvases and finished pieces to be brought in to and out of the room.
There will also be mezzanine level with office space and room for meetings.
The artist has amassed more than 2.7m followers on Instagram, and another 750,000 on Facebook.
Earlier this year he told of how a psychotic episode, caused by a build-up of stress, left him convinced he was friends with Banksy and Kanye West.
“I am much better now thanks to appropriate medication, therapy and the support of my family and I am able to doodle better than ever before,” he said.
