Burglar ‘charged down the stairs’ after allegedly breaking into pensioner’s home

A man in his nineties was allegedly attacked after he returned home and disturbed a burglar who was still inside.

The victim returned to his home on Binfield Road, in Wokingham, to find a broken panel in his front door.

As he opened the door, an unknown man “charged down the stairs” towards him. The suspect then assaulted the man before running up Binfield Road towards Barratt Crescent.

An ambulance was sent to the scene and checked over the victim but he was uninjured.

Several items of jewellery were stolen including a watch with the inscription “PRESENTED TO [victim’s name] ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM EASTERN AND SONS” on the back.

A 23-year-old man from Wokingham has been arrested in connection with the incident. He has been released on bail until January 12.

Thames Valley Police have launched an appeal for information about the burglary.

The incident took place at around 10am on Wednesday, December 15.

Investigating officer Richard Fisher, based at Loddon Valley police station, said: “I am appealing to the public to please get in touch if they have any information about this burglary.

“Particularly anyone with dash cameras who drove down Binfield Road around this time, please check your cameras as it could assist our investigation.

“Call us on 101 or make a report online, quoting reference number 43210565006.

“Alternatively, call the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
